ASWCS Annual Conference 20 April 2010
Heather and Rowland were among the 130 delegates who attended the 11th ASWCS Annual Conference 2010 “Efficient and Effective Cancer Services” at Bristol Zoo Gardens. The highlight of the conference was a presentation on the “Enhanced Recovery Programme” by Professor Tim Rockall, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. He outlined his preference of not using epidural anaesthesia or catheters so as to improve recovery times. The combination of keyhole surgery and enhanced recovery resulted in shorter hospital stays that benefited the patient and the hospital. In patients where no stoma was formed and where there was support at home they could be reviewed and discharged in just 24 hours. He showed video clips including open surgery; keyhole surgery; a patient in recovery with a big smile and cup of tea and a couple of patients dressed and walking the day after their surgery.
Nader Francis was to have given a presentation on “Local Enhanced Recovery” but he was stuck in Egypt due to the volcanic ash problem.
There was also a presentation on “Maggie’s Centres” by Sarah Beard who showed a 7 minute video showing the spectacular architecture of the purpose designed support centres.
What is a Maggie's Centre? A Maggie’s Centre is a place to turn to for help with any of the problems, small or large, associated with cancer.
Under one roof you can access help with information, benefits advice, and psychological support both individually and in groups, courses and stress reducing strategies. You don’t have to make an appointment, or be referred and everything we offer is free of charge.
It is there for anybody who feels the need for help, which includes those who love and look after someone with cancer, who often feel as frightened and vulnerable as those who actually have the disease.
A Maggie’s Centre will be many things to many people. It is there for anybody to use in the way they want to. There isn’t a one size fits all recipe for how you live with cancer. Everybody needs to find their own way.
The job of the professionals at Maggie’s is to listen to you, to help you find out what you want and give you the tools to help yourself. If you'd like to know more, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page or send an email to enquiries@maggiescentres.org.
